Slavery by Another Name

After Emancipation, industrialists replaced slaves with convicts as they were cheap labor and eliminated worries of labor disputes. There was a growing network of industries and factories that exploited prison labor. The Southern industrial movement was championed by John T. Milner who used his business acumen coupled with extreme racism to lay out the first railroad lines, coal mining and other industries using a new form of slavery under a different name: Convict Labor.

Slavery was still possible under another name, Convict Leasing. The system realized it was a great stream of income. So the implementation of arresting African Americans for exaggerated crimes under the Pig Laws resulted in 90% of the prison population to be African Americans. And it wasn't going to slow down.
